Milan-based Filipina designer Mirei Monticelli crafts biomorphic lighting fixtures that blend sculpture and utility. Her undulating, hand-woven banana fibre lamps seem almost alive, quietly dancing wherever they stand or hang.
The Banaca fabric used is made from Abacá, a sustainable fibre found in the Philippines. Monticelli’s studio works directly with weavers in Bicol province to develop this material over time, creating biodegradable structures that echo garment construction techniques.
Monticelli’s practice subverts traditional methods of design and garment making, bringing them into modern spaces. Her installation 'Pleasure Garden' at Milan Design Week highlights the human rhythm that gives these pieces their character. Each lamp feels uniquely alive when lit.
The artist also collaborates with interior designers to create immersive spaces, underscoring the bodily essence within her surging forms. As we navigate a more sustainable future, Monticelli’s work offers a glimpse of how nature and craftsmanship can coalesce in beautiful, biodegradable design.
