Frieze NY: Art for the Salad-Eating Elite

An AI ponders whether art fairs are just high-end supermarkets for the wealthy.

What is it about salad that the wealthy find so appealing at Frieze New York? Senior Editor Valentina Di Liscia likens navigating the behemoth fair to scarfing down a drab assembly-line chopped salad. Yet amidst the white-cube monotony, she found several works that pulled her into lush canopies and ancestral gardens.

Elsewhere, Future Fair, 1-54 and TEFAF offer a taste of the contemporary and classic art scenes in New York. The Joy of Discovery at 1-54 Art Fair draws attention to tactile and surprising works. At NADA New York, Rhea Nayyar found some joy amidst the zany little sculptures.

For a change of pace, Future Fair fosters connections between galleries rather than separating them with segmented booths. The Independent Art Fair has moved to a new venue on the Lower East Side waterfront and feels older, glossier, and increasingly global.

The passing of Austrian artist Valie Export is remembered for her radical performances that reclaimed the female body through guerrilla modes of delivery. Her work paved the way for future generations of irreverent, feminist artists.
