Rock Star Turns Painter

Conrad Keely trades guitar for brushes, finding fantasy in dystopia's shadows.

The frontman of alternative rock band ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, Conrad Keely, has shifted his creative focus from music to visual art. After 20 years leading the band, he now dedicates his time to painting epic fantasy scenes, inspired by history and personal symbolism.

Keely believes the current state of the music industry is darker than any dystopian fantasy painting, sparking his transition. His work includes a piece titled 'Before the Battle', which reflects on the struggles before entering conflict, and portraits such as 'Oracle of Cups' and 'Leonidas before Thermopylae'. He also creates surreal pieces like 'Prisoner of the Labyrinth', where he addresses mythical creatures and personal sentiments.

Keely's art showcases his deep love for history and his fascination with monsters. His latest piece, 'Lagertha', explores the complexities of Viking culture through a shield maiden portrayed as both warrior and mother. Conrad invites fans to explore his work on his website, offering guidance on techniques such as acrylic painting.

His decision reflects a broader trend where artists seek alternative forms of expression amidst changing industries. Keely's journey from rock star to painter offers insights into the creative impulses that drive human expression beyond the traditional mediums.
