Universal Music Group (UMG) and TikTok have renewed their licensing agreement with a specific focus on removing unauthorized AI-generated music from the platform. This move aims to ensure artists and songwriters are properly credited and compensated.
The tension between UMG and TikTok has long been evident, especially in 2024 when UMG accused TikTok of failing to address issues surrounding AI and copyright. As a result, UMG temporarily removed its music catalog from the platform, highlighting the importance of major label licenses for TikTok’s success.
The agreement reflects the growing concern within the music industry about AI-generated content that mimics artists' voices or creates counterfeit songs. Viral tracks using AI tools have sparked widespread worry as they often rack up millions of streams before being taken down.
This deal could set a precedent for tech companies navigating the complex relationship between AI, intellectual property, and platform accountability. As European Union regulations tighten around AI-generated content, other platforms face increasing pressure to establish similar governance structures.
TikTok’s renewed commitment also aims to prove its worth as an earnings powerhouse for artists and rights holders. Last year, it launched the 'TikTok for Artists' insights platform to help musicians promote their work more effectively.
