A self-portrait by painter Clarence Heyward at the Houston Museum of African American Culture was defaced last month. The museum's CEO believes it to be racially motivated.
Despite initial restoration, the artwork was returned to its damaged state to encourage conversation over destruction, the museum stated.
The painting is part of Heyward’s exhibition ‘EDEN’, exploring Black American identity through Genesis imagery. He expressed disappointment but noted that his work invites reflection and dialogue.
HMAAC, a privately funded institution, faces challenges from politicised arts funding in America under the Trump administration.
Chief Executive Davinia Reed vowed not to be deterred by such acts of intimidation or damage to cultural expression.
