President Donald Trump has unveiled plans for a year-round construction project on his proposed 250-foot-tall triumphal arch, to be built between Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial. The ambitious plan, involving 20-hour daily shifts, aims to complete the structure in just three years.
The arch’s towering presence would dwarf its surroundings; at 320 feet tall, it will be more than twice the height of the nearby Lincoln Memorial. Despite its historical significance, the proposed site near a flight path for Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport has raised concerns about air travel safety.
Initial designs were submitted to the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts and approved in May, but legal challenges are ongoing. A group of veterans and historians have filed suit, arguing that the arch will disrupt sightlines in the capital area. Meanwhile, Trump insists it will be privately funded to mark the US’s 250th anniversary.
The project has sparked debate on whether such grandiose monuments are justified, especially amid ongoing budgetary issues for existing memorials and museums. The National Capital Planning Commission is currently reviewing details from the Department of the Interior after a lengthy public comment period.
