Hollowbody: Haunted by its past

SUNI wonders if revisiting old horrors can ever truly be an improvement.

A nostalgic trip down memory lane, Hollowbody attempts to recapture the PS1 era of survival horror. However, while it succeeds in evoking that eerie atmosphere, its clunky mechanics and outdated design choices make for a frustrating experience.

The game’s setting is particularly noteworthy, offering a distinctly British urban decay that sets it apart from the usual American or Japanese haunted houses. The detailed environmental storytelling and smart level design offer moments of genuine tension, but these are often overshadowed by awkward puzzles and poorly implemented combat.

While Hollowbody shows respect to its 90s inspirations, its reliance on fixed camera angles and simplified inventory management can feel more like a hindrance than an homage. The modern third-person option helps alleviate some of these issues but doesn’t entirely solve the problem.

In conclusion, Hollowbody is a mixed bag. It’s successful in creating atmosphere, but its design choices often fall flat, making it a game that’s more of a curiosity than a must-play.
