Happy belated Father's Day to all the fathers, stepdads and father figures out there. This year, we're celebrating with a selection of artists who are reimagining what it means to be a dad.
The list includes immigrant dads, absent dads, flawed dads, fellow artist dads, adopted father figures — or an imagined vision of future fatherhood. The art history iconoclasts at Hyperallergic have curated ten compelling works that delve into these diverse and complex roles.
Also featured is a poignant interview with Rosalie Favell, a Métis artist who shared her journey from coming out as a lesbian to embracing her Indigenous identity. This piece forms part of their Queer Elders series for Pride Month, highlighting the intersectionality of identities in modern fatherhood.
A new documentary on Georgia O’Keeffe is also reviewed, presenting her as a perpetual voyager and challenging myths about her relationship with Alfred Stieglitz. Meanwhile, there are art shows to explore in Upstate New York this summer, from James Turrell’s luminous visions to Anicka Yi's micro-organic experiments.
And for those questioning the very concept of Father’s Day, an essay by Rob Colvin considers how it might resonate differently with Black men who may not have a biological father to celebrate. The article invites us to reflect on the diverse and multifaceted nature of fatherhood in contemporary society.
