Illumination Prepares for New Alien Adventure

With Not Alone, can they create a new Minions moment or just another quirky cartoon?

The pill-shaped characters' latest adventure, Minions & Monsters, comes to cinemas this week. But the studio behind the franchise is already hyping its next project: an original movie that could provide its next Minions moment.

Not Alone introduces a trio of aliens with a very Minion-like blend of minimalist design and endearingly chaotic temperament. The first trailer hints at a gentle romantic comedy, but the alien fugitives Dunk, Welly and Shirm are voiced by British comedians Rob Brydon, Diane Morgan and Jamie Demetriou, bringing Illumination's unpredictable slapstick humour to proceedings.

The characters look destined to be scene stealers, creating a striking contrast to the awkward romantic chemistry between rocket mechanic Joe, voiced by Timothée Chalamet in his first animated role, and astro-botanist Fran (Selena Gomez). Officer Zandro, from whom they're trying to escape, is voiced by Brett Goldstein.

The movie will be directed by Illumination veterans Eric Guillon, Claire Dodgson and Jonathan Del Val and is scheduled to be released on 16 April 2027. But can Not Alone live up to the Minions' legacy?
