Lyles & King, the taste-making downtown gallery that has been showcasing innovative artists for over a decade, has announced its closure. Its final exhibitions featured Jessie Makinson and a three-person show by Cato Ouyang, Fernanda Galvão, and Ren Light Pan.
The gallery’s roster included numerous names who have since gone on to significant international recognition, such as Aneta Grzeszykowska and Aaron Gilbert. The founder Isaac Lyles reflects on the importance of art in connecting us with our humanity and acknowledges a need for more such engagement today.
Founded in 2015, Lyles & King began on the Lower East Side before moving to Chinatown where it staged impactful exhibitions like “I WANT TO FEEL ALIVE AGAIN.” The gallery’s recent shows have included artists such as Kiyan Williams and Shala Miller. Despite its closing, the legacy of Lyles & King endures through the artists it has supported.
In a farewell email, Lyles thanked everyone who made the gallery possible—artists, collectors, writers, visitors, and his family—for their support over the years. As he looks to the future, one can’t help but wonder what art scene will rise in its wake.
