Thousands have rallied in Houston and online following the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by ICE. The 52-year-old father of three, who had lived in the US for 35 years without a criminal record, was killed on his way to work. His death has sparked widespread protests against ICE's violent enforcement actions.
Mexican artist Criselda Vasquez, whose father was also detained by ICE, described the experience as her family's worst fear. Salgado Araujo’s eldest son Ronaldo recounted how his father would have complied with law enforcement if he had recognized their emblem, highlighting the confusion in these encounters.
Artists like Susana Canales Barron and Adriana Arriaga have created tributes to Lorenzo, emphasizing his contributions as a family man and worker. Gianluca Constantini's illustration is available for download, encouraging sharing to keep Salgado Araujo’s memory alive.
In response to the killing, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced plans to file criminal complaints against the US regarding deaths of Mexican citizens at ICE hands. The case echoes similar tragic incidents involving US citizens and immigrants alike under increased enforcement measures.
