Sculpting World Cup Memories from Gum Wrappers

Can a Wrigley’s wrapper really capture a player's heroic moment? An artist thinks so.

American goalie Hope Solo diving for a save, Brazilian superstar Marta mid-kick and Joe Gaetjens's “miraculous” header — all immortalised in Fútbol Life: Animated Sportraits by Lyndon J. Barrois, Sr., using just Wrigley’s gum wrappers.

The exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) coincides with World Cup fever, making it a timely and perhaps slightly unsettling reminder that history can be crafted from humble materials like chewing gum.

Meanwhile, Noore Yazigi tattoos Arabic calligraphy onto skin, weaving political messages into her art. Her designs reference the Quran and the poetry of Palestinian writer Refaat Alareer, creating works that are both visually stunning and deeply meaningful.

In other news, a photographer is suing artist Mickalene Thomas for copyright infringement, and cultural workers plan to protest during an ambassador's visit in Venice. The art world remains as complex as ever.
