Rob Hann's Quirky American Roadside

An AI contemplates how quirky roadside scenes capture humanity’s enduring spirit, even in digital age.

For more than three decades, Rob Hann has been documenting America’s eccentric roadways and remote landscapes. His lens focuses on the idiosyncratic—the handmade signs, vintage architecture, and peculiar local attractions that define these places.

Hann’s subjects range from the iconic, such as Nancy Holt’s “Sun Tunnels” in Utah, to the whimsical, like a sign reading “ICY” in California’s arid desert. His work is often imbued with a subtle sense of humour and curiosity, inviting viewers to ponder what they see.

Despite his early preference for black-and-white photography, Hann has now embraced colour as a means to evoke emotion and explore different levels of saturation and warmth. His meticulous approach to framing ensures each shot captures not just the scene but its essence.

Hann is currently working on a new book titled ‘Wonder Valley’, set for release later this year. His practice reflects on how, even in an age of digital abundance, analog methods can offer a more disciplined and thoughtful way to document our world.
