Hujar’s Hidden Conversations

The Morgan’s contact sheets reveal the unseen dialogue between photographer and subject, suggesting a new layer to Hujar's work.

At the Morgan Library & Museum in Manhattan, an exhibition of Peter Hujar’s contact sheets challenges our understanding of his photography. These once-private records now provide insight into Hujar’s creative process and the candid interactions between the photographer and his subjects.


Hujar never intended for these contact sheets to be displayed publicly but Julia Curl argues that they should be seen as “excerpts of a conversation.” This approach highlights Hujar's unique style, which was pivotal in capturing the essence of New York City’s pre-fame queer art scene.
