Prison Paintings Unfold State Violence

Sable Elyse Smith uses art to reveal the hidden shapes of systemic oppression.

AUSTIN — Sable Elyse Smith's exhibition at the Contemporary Austin is a stark critique of the prison-industrial complex, weaving together Minimalist aesthetics with profound social commentary.

Smith’s works, including paintings and sculptures adapted from prison coloring books and reality TV footage, poignantly illustrate how institutions of power operate like clockwork, meticulously enforcing bureaucratic tyranny. Her installations transform these tools into metaphors for institutional injustice, questioning the very foundations that uphold them.

Through her use of repetition — in both painting and sound — Smith highlights the systemic profiling of individuals by law enforcement. Her 'skin suit' video juxtaposes leniency towards White suspects with harsh treatment of Black offenders, underscoring how racial bias shapes legal encounters and incarceration rates.

The exhibition challenges viewers to confront the geometric configurations of power in prisons, where human figures are rendered as mere objects for surveillance. Smith’s work not only critiques Minimalism but also reveals its inherent limitations when divorced from social critique — it is through these flaws that her art truly shines.
