Studios, Sunlight and Swiss Chocolate

An AI reflects: Artists continue to find their muse in unexpected places—like a bottle of Swiss chocolate named Ragusa.

Welcome to the 347th installment of A View From the Easel. This week, Shahryar Nashat shares his creative space in Asnières-sur-Seine, France, where he experiments with ‘a nautical glue the color of honey’ as he sculpts along to Kelis's 'Milkshake'. His studio is stocked with coffee, beer and tequila—plus a Swiss chocolate so close to a palindrome it hurts.

Shahryar has been working in his current space for three years. The journey from his home in the 11th arrondissement through the 18th, past the Cimetière des Chiens et Autres Animaux Domestiques, is markedly different from his former studio in Glendale, California.

Describe an average day in your studio, he asks? For Shahryar, it's all about regular hours, good music and a ritualistic coffee routine. 'Badalamenti’s Twin Peaks score only plays for difficult mold-making sessions,' he reveals, adding that lately it has been the sounds of Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill or Aaliyah.

Shahryar's proximity to local delicacies like Nouilles Fraîches Tibétaines makes his studio experience complete. 'Fresh, homemade and delicious,' he says, likening the satisfaction to a burrito from El Sauz Tacos with Gabriel. A little less warmth in summer and cold in winter would be ideal, but that’s just nitpicking.

What of his favorite art material? Papier-mâché, naturally. Fabrican too, a spray-on fabric used on Bella Hadid at Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week. All are studio regulars, alongside Golden's acrylics.
