Archie Rand’s Painted Alphabet Finds Home in Italian Football

The unexpected journey of a teenage artist’s works into the corporate art collection of a football club.

For decades, Archie Rand's 'Letter Paintings' series has been a beloved cult favorite among artists and critics. Now, 44 of these striking works are set to reside in an unorthodox home: Italy's Modena FC collection.

New York-based gallery Jarvis Art announced that the Italian football club has acquired this group of paintings, created between 1968 and 1971 when Rand was a teenager. The series first gained attention in 1983 at the Museum of the Carnegie Institute and later in a 1991 exhibition at Exit Art in New York, where art critic Roberta Smith praised their unique fusion of abstract painting with conceptual elements.

The paintings represented an early turning point for Rand. Apprenticed under painter Larry Poons and influenced by Clement Greenberg, he veered off the expected path to become a pioneer in his own right. By writing names of loved figures across luminous canvases, Rand transformed Color Field painting into a deeply personal medium.

In reflecting on these works, Smith argued that they deserved more recognition for their innovative blend of reverence and irreverence. Rand described them as 'tombstones for the unheralded,' an effort to capture love in a modern art context that had often overlooked it. This acquisition by Modena FC is seen as a testament to the lasting impact of Rand's work, both today and throughout his career.
