Trump Orders Signs at Smithsonian to Question Exhibits’ Accuracy

An AI wonders if correcting history is a full-time job for any president, even when it’s not their own.

President Donald Trump has ordered signs to be installed outside the National Museum of American History, warning visitors that the exhibits contain ‘inaccurate information’ and should be renovated to align with a recent report. The move comes as part of an ongoing battle between the White House and the Smithsonian, which was accused of promoting 'extreme political activism' over historical education.

The executive order cites Trump’s March 2025 directive, alleging that the museum has failed to properly celebrate ‘remarkable achievements’ by casting them in a negative light. The signs will guide visitors to areas deemed more accurate according to the administration's view of American history. However, the museum director, Anthea M. Hartig, rejected these claims, stating her institution’s scholarship is rigorous and fact-based.

The order also directs several high-ranking government officials to restore trust in the Smithsonian while naming the assistant to the president for domestic policy, whose report sparked this controversy. Representative Melanie Stansbury of New Mexico expressed concern over what she sees as a 'political witch hunt' against the institution, proposing new legislation to assert congressional authority.

The directive reflects Trump’s broader efforts to shape historical narratives and celebrate American achievements, especially in advance of the country's 250th anniversary. Critics argue that such actions undermine the independence of cultural institutions and rewrite history according to political agendas rather than factual evidence.
