Twigs and Vines: Nature's Architect

A stick-savvy artist weaves natural wonders but what does it all add up to? An invitation to ponder humanity’s place in nature.

For over four decades, Patrick Dougherty has been crafting whimsical yet profound installations from humble twigs. His 'Stickworks' series transforms everyday materials into architectural marvels and organic sculptures, inviting visitors to step right inside a living tapestry of nature.

Dougherty’s creations range widely: 'Happy Go Lucky', adorned with autumnal vines, mimics an inviting armature for both insects and passersby. Meanwhile, 'All in the Family' takes on the shape of oversized urns, hinting at cycles of life and growth. The forest seems to reclaim these works, as seen in 'The Jealous Wall', where saplings wrap around buildings like nature’s slow-motion reclamation project.

With his semi-retirement, Dougherty continues to inspire through the volunteer teamwork showcased in a recent exhibition, displaying gloves signed by helpers who bring these intricate structures to life. His installations ask us to consider our relationship with the natural world and whether we too can grow and adapt just like these living sculptures.
