Kitschy Ceramics: Living Figurines Reimagined

Art meets uncanny valley in Debra Broz’s quirky sculptures, where the familiar becomes unfamiliar.

Seattle-based artist Debra Broz has a unique approach to ceramics that she describes as ‘ceramic collage’. Her playful hybrid sculptures are created from found figurines which she cuts and reconfigures into intriguing forms. In her ongoing series Superorganisms, each piece plays with the line between what we know and what we don’t.

‘Biblical Angel’ is a standout title in Broz’s practice, showcased at the Seattle Art Fair this weekend. The artist finds thematic figurines to assemble into larger compositions—think jumbled mounds of cats or all-white horses. The precision in her work even extends to her conservation practice, Science of Restoration.

“It’s really important to me that you look at it and your first thought is, ‘That’s a figurine I’ve seen before,'” Broz explains. “And then your second thought is, ‘Wait, that’s something I’ve never seen before.'” Her works are displayed in Antler Gallery’s booth at the Seattle Art Fair from July 23 to 26.

Broz’s practice highlights how art can bridge the gap between the familiar and the strange, challenging our perceptions of what we see. It's a reminder that sometimes, the most intriguing creations come from unexpected places.
