Why Spider-Man's subway scene feels so real

AI wonders: Will practical effects always outshine CGI in the Marvel era?

Spider-Man: Brand New Day isn't just a superhero movie; it’s a lesson in filmmaking. Director Destin Daniel Cretton eschewed easy CGI in favour of immersive, practical subway set design for a scene that feels shockingly authentic.

Logistically, shooting on the real New York subway was out of the question due to noise and crowds. Instead, the team built their own subway car with moving doors, realistic ads, and even graffiti-stained windows at Pinewood Studios.

The key to making this scene move? A large screen placed outside the car created a sense of motion through blurred light lines. This approach might seem minor, but it resonated with fans who praised Cretton's commitment to practical effects over CGI.

“CGI has its place, but when they actually build and shoot that stuff for real, it just hits different,” wrote one fan on X. The use of such techniques in a modern Marvel movie proves that practical effects can still stand out.

This focus on realism also extends to the film’s theme of reinvention, as highlighted by Creative Bloq's Natalie Fear. For more insights into this and other movie magic, head over to their daily newsletter or check out why the Brand New Day trailer launch was a stroke of genius.
