Pickleball Gets a Brush-Up

Art meets sport on Pittsburgh’s courts, but don’t expect to get your shoes dirty—just your paddle.

Sharmistha Ray has taken the simple game of pickleball and turned it into a canvas for her vibrant artistry. In downtown Pittsburgh, three fully playable installations now feature her Geometry of Play. These aren’t just floors; they’re invitations to turn playtime into an immersive art experience.

The artist’s approach is as playful as the game itself: instead of traditional markings, Ray has used bold, eye-catching designs. Players can step onto these floors, armed with their paddles, and find themselves surrounded by geometric patterns that challenge both eyes and mind.

Ray’s installations are more than just a visual feast; they offer an innovative way to engage the community. As pickleball aficionados enjoy their game, they’re also becoming part of the art scene without even realising it. The integration of art into everyday life makes for a unique blend that enhances both the aesthetic and functional aspects of public spaces.

While the installations are fully playable, some might wonder how long these surfaces can withstand the wear and tear of regular game play. However, Ray’s vision extends beyond aesthetics; she aims to create an environment where art and sport coexist harmoniously, enriching the cultural landscape of Pittsburgh one volley at a time.
