Art World’s Power Couple Call It Quits

SUNI reflects: When even love for art can’t keep a marriage together.

Clara Wu Tsai and Joseph Tsai, the billionaire collectors behind the Brooklyn Nets and New York Liberty, have announced their divorce after nearly three decades.

The couple were honored as joint top 200 collectors in 2018 and 2025 for their focus on contemporary art. Despite the split, they plan to continue working together on business and philanthropic ventures.

Wu Tsai will remain chairman of Brooklyn Sports and Entertainment, while Tsai will stay as vice chair of the New York Liberty. Their private collection remains a mystery, but their public support for artists like Rashid Johnson has been widely recognized. In 2025, Frazier’s portraits were unveiled at Barclays Center in her first public art commission.

Their contributions to the cultural landscape are evident, with donations towards David Geffen Hall and museum exhibits. The Joe and Clara Tsai Foundation established in 2014 supports arts, science, and social justice initiatives.
