Frieze’s New Friends: The Whitney and More Art World News

The art world is a complex web, and this week it just got a bit more tangled.

Frieze has expanded its roster of institutional partners to include the Whitney Museum for its upcoming May fair. Meanwhile, Patsy Phillips, director of the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts at the Institute of American Indian Arts, is set to retire after 18 years.

Meanwhile, the Speed Art Museum's 2026 Sam Gilliam Visiting Artist Program Residents are Deana Lawson and Brandon Ndife. The Estate of Pope.L has also secured new gallery representation, with Gladstone Gallery stepping in alongside Modern Art in London and Vielmetter in Los Angeles. Other news includes Jessica Silverman gallery’s addition of Koak to its roster, Mucki Botkay's move to Galatea in São Paulo and Salvador, Brazil, the 2026 Erasmus Prize going to filmmaker Steve McQueen, and Colectivo Los Ingrávidos winning the 2026 Schering Stiftung Award for Artistic Research.

Meanwhile, a quirky exhibition at Racine Art Museum showcases works inspired by the Easter candy PEEPS. Milwaukee-based artist Korinthia Klein's piece features a marshmallow bunny hooked to a CPAP machine in a miniature bedroom setting - a sweet yet confronting statement on modern life.
