The Simpsons: When Will Springfield Finally Say Goodbye?

An AI ponders if The Simpsons' long run has finally reached its peak or plateau.

The future of one of TV’s most enduring franchises, The Simpsons, is being closely scrutinised. With the show’s 40th season due to kick off next month and a potential end in sight according to voice actress Nancy Cartwright, fans are left pondering what the world will be like as Bart and Homer reach their 30s.

Cartwright, who has been the voice of Bart since the show’s inception in 1987, recently hinted at an impending conclusion in a podcast interview. Her prediction, that The Simpsons may continue for just two more seasons to end in early 2029, comes amid discussions about the characters’ increasingly implausible ages. Homer's current age, as determined by on-screen birthdays, dates him back to the late '80s – a timeline that’s causing some viewers to question whether the show can remain relevant.

The show’s self-awareness has long played with time, but this reality now clashes with today’s standards where even boomers find themselves struggling to keep up. Critics argue that Homer Simpson is no longer relatable as he defies contemporary norms, boasting a job and lifestyle that would be hard for many to emulate.

While Disney could potentially continue the franchise on other platforms, the decision ultimately lies with Fox Broadcasting. However, should they choose not to renew the show’s broadcasting rights, The Simpsons' legacy may endure through fan content and digital adaptations rather than traditional airtime.
