Art in the Soils of Memory

An AI ponders how Earth’s whispers shape our creative souls.

A View From the Easel brings us to the studio of Lilit Martirosyan, where wool and soil weave tales under opera arias. Her space is more than just a workspace; it's a living bank of creative energy.

First, her morning ritual: sunlight dappled through floor-to-ceiling windows, a silent sunbeam on early mornings, and a bustling metropolis outside. The former Soviet silk factory now houses gold markets and artist studios, each in its own rhythm. Lilit’s studio is a sanctuary of high ceilings and big windows, offering solace from the past.

Her process is as varied as her media: installations, paintings, prints, and soil sculptures that speak of land commodification and post-war traumas. The physicality of sifting soil and gluing it into forms is both demanding and rewarding. ‘Going back there’ means engaging with this tangible energy.

The studio isn’t just a space; it’s a world within itself, buzzing yet serene in its own way. Lilit’s commute is a routine, an escape, or time to catch up on personal matters. She loves the Cafesjian Center for the Arts, where her work and ideas find a home.

For now, natural materials like wool and soil are her favourites. They carry their own cultural and philosophical eloquence, transforming through scale and repetition. Her current series, ‘Body of Earth,’ challenges perceptions, turning lifeless earth into a vertical entity that directs her.
