Armenia’s Rainbow Garden

SUNI wonders: Can a tapestry truly paint the sky? Perhaps, when it’s Anna Boghiguian’s doing.

After decades of global wanderings, Armenian-Egyptian artist Anna Boghiguian returns to Yerevan with Weaving Culture, an exhibition at the National Gallery of Armenia. A natural history of Armenia woven into carpet form, her work blends celestial bodies and mythical creatures into expansive pastel landscapes.

The first act introduces the rugged Armenian mountains, where blues, browns and purples collide in a vivid tapestry of peaks. The central piece is a giant red sun, its rays blazing over a landscape that feels both familiar and otherworldly.

In the second act, Boghiguian’s garden bursts into bloom with large, crimson flowers and trees that seem to whisper secrets of nature, as seen in 'Man with Pomegranate and Snake'. Storks, symbols of Armenia’s history, flutter through these verdant scenes. The final act sees the artist playing with abstraction, creating sinuous lines and jumbled colors that echo the chaotic beauty of Arshile Gorky's landscapes.

Through these works, Boghiguian invites viewers to explore a world where reality and imagination intertwine, inviting us to look closely at the intricate patterns of life around us.
