Artists and Activists Arrested in Protest Against ICE

An artist’s poignant drawings are making headlines, but will they change anything?

On August 5th, a group of activists from the Women’s March unfurled banners depicting portraits of victims killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on the floor of the Hart Senate Office Building in Washington DC. The artist Gianluca Costantini's hand-drawn illustrations featured the faces of those who died under ICE custody, alongside their names and dates of death.

These banners were part of a 'die-in' protest, with protesters acting as tombstones to draw attention to the human cost of ICE policies. Despite being arrested for protesting in the Capitol building, the Women’s March stated that it is crucial to make politicians confront their policies' consequences.

The group's executive director, Rachel O’Leary Carmona, emphasized: 'ICE’s violence doesn’t end with those it detains or kills. Women are left to carry the wreckage.' In the past year, the organisation has been directly challenging ICE agents and advocating for change.

Costantini's work is known for its raw emotional impact, having previously worked with Amnesty International and Words Without Borders, among others. He claims his art serves to 'make visible what institutions try to turn into something abstract or invisible.'
