In 2022, New York resident Dan Rimada launched Bodega Cats of New York, raising the profile of feline shopkeepers in iconic city bodegas. The project includes a new book with photos and stories of these beloved cats from across all five boroughs.
Despite New York City’s health code violations, thousands of cats serve as mousers and rat catchers in these shops. The type of care the cats receive can vary greatly between stores, yet Rimada documents their individual stories to raise awareness about their welfare.
Rimada has introduced two bills aimed at protecting these cats by exempting them from automatic New York City Health Code violations. One bill would require voluntary vaccination and spay/neuter programs, while the other legally allows cats in retail stores if they meet veterinary requirements. The city’s residents are encouraged to support this initiative.
