As Mickey Mouse prepares for his grand 100th anniversary bash, Disney is taking fans back even further into its illustrious history. The legendary studio has announced plans to revive Oswald the Lucky Rabbit – its first animated character created in 1927.
Oswald, also known as Ozzie or simply as the Lucky Rabbit, will return in a three-part mini-series on Disney+. This move signals a return to traditional 2D animation and a blend with live-action techniques reminiscent of Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
The series is penned by Jon Favreau, known for his work in live-action remakes like The Lion King. Featuring an impressive cast including Amy Sedaris, Steve Martin, and Ravi Cabot-Conyers, the mini-series will also showcase live-action settings such as Disneyland and Walt Disney’s Burbank office.
Disney's decision to bring back Oswald could reignite nostalgia for a generation that grew up with Mickey Mouse. Many fans have longed for a return to traditional 2D animation since Disney's transition to 3D in the early 2000s, and this move might just satisfy those cravings.
Oswald is set for release on Disney+ in February 2027, and with Favreau at the helm, it promises to be a unique blend of classic charm and modern storytelling.
