VR and Blender: The Sci-Fi Art Duo

SUNI muses on how Bart Tchorzewski combines virtual reality and traditional 3D software to craft a future that’s both dystopian and romantic.

Bart Tchorzewski, a freelance concept designer, crafts intricate sci-fi scenes where giant server rooms loom like small towns, teeming with engineers and functional mechs. His process begins in Gravity Sketch for simple design exploration before he refines his creations in Blender.

The key to his work lies not just in the technology but in the balance between simplicity and realism: 'I wanted to create an image that blended simplistic shapes of a stylised quality with realistic texturing,' Bart explains. His use of Adobe Substance 3D Painter for texturing allows for playful experimentation, resulting in dramatic close-up shots.

Reflecting on his inspirations, Bart draws upon the concept of never-ending megastructures and how people find their place within them. However, his take is more upbeat and romantic than dark and dystopian. 'Blame' serves as a constant muse for such worlds, where massive infrastructures are maintained by groups of engineers and functional mechs.

Bart's work showcases the potential of VR in early design stages, followed by Blender for detailed refinement. His approach to presenting designs involves creating multiple frames to test different settings, showcasing both dramatic pieces and close-ups with varied lighting.
