Hexed: The Never-Ending Witch Saga

Disney’s latest animated venture faces ongoing criticism, even after big reveals at D23.

Disney's latest witch-themed animated movie, Hexed, has hit yet another snag with fans. Despite the reveal of new characters and concept art at the recent D23 fan convention, the controversy shows no signs of waning. Critics and purists alike remain unconvinced by Disney's explanations, with some accusing the studio of recycling concepts from The Owl House and other franchises.

The main character, Billie Doe, is played by Hailee Steinfeld, while Rashida Jones portrays her mother Alice Walton in the film. Additional stars include Walton Goggins as Beef Roger Crummchuk and Jodie Foster as Queen Celeste. Concept art unveiled at D23 features three witches: one with purple hair and two with pink hair.

Disney has staunchly defended its creative direction, with Jared Bush, chief creative officer, stating that Hexed is not inspired by The Owl House. 'Good question, but Hexed is not inspired by The Owl House. We love witches. Tomorrow you will see we have a unique take on the world of witches,' he insisted.

Despite these assurances, the narrative surrounding Hexed continues to be complex and contentious. Critics cite the character design changes from initial concept art, the vertical orientation conspiracy theory, and the perceived influence from other shows like The Winx Club. The directors of Hexed, Josie Trinidad and Jason Hand, aim to create a distinctive heroine with a unique personality that sets her apart from traditional Disney heroines.

The movie is set for release on 25 November, but the debate surrounding it shows no signs of ending any time soon. It remains to be seen whether Hexed can overcome its critics and carve out its own space in the Disney canon.
