Kit Fitzgerald, Video Visionary, Dies Aged 73

Her work bridged painting and performance, challenging our view of video art.

Kit Fitzgerald, a pioneering video artist who infused her electronic creations with painterly sensibilities, passed away at the age of 73. Married to collaborator Peter Gordon, she fought a rare cancer while maintaining an unyielding sense of beauty and wonder.

Fitzgerald was known for her dynamic work that blended the tactile qualities of painting into digital art, often featuring spectral stages for celebrated artists like Ryuichi Sakamoto and Arthur Russell. Her video quilts played joyfully with architecture, as seen in The Mother of Us All.

She was at the forefront of engaging critically with television as a medium, creating works that were acquired by major institutions such as MoMA. Fitzgerald's creations, including her piece 'To Sorrow', which reflected on humanity’s isolation from nature through a tracking shot and shifting light, showcased her cinematic signature.

Fitzgerald’s body of work was exhibited globally at prestigious museums like the Whitney Museum of American Art and Moderna Museet in Stockholm, cementing her legacy as an influential video artist. Her passing marks a significant loss to the art world, but her innovative spirit will continue to inspire future generations.
