Canada’s Art Thieves Faced a Daring Conservator

An obscure agency played a key role in exposing one of Canada's biggest art frauds, but has remained largely unnoticed.

A little-known Canadian federal agency, the Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI), has finally received its due for playing a pivotal role in convicting fraudsters selling counterfeit paintings by Indigenous artist Norval Morrisseau. The CCI, part of the Heritage Department, assisted Ontario Provincial Police and exposed over 1,000 fake works.

The case, which involved 40 charges against eight people, was so significant that even conservative scientists were called to testify in court, with Mylène Choquette from the CCI providing crucial evidence. The Institute's work helped turn the tide, but only now is it getting recognition for its efforts.

CCI conservators used cutting-edge technology and meticulous analysis to detect alterations hidden beneath layers of paint. In one instance, Choquette discovered codes under the red and blue areas of a painting, revealing the fraudsters' systematic approach. These findings were instrumental in dismantling the counterfeit rings that had been operating for years.

The story highlights the broader issue of provenance and authenticity in art collecting, with 2024 research indicating that such concerns are now among collectors' top worries. Morrisseau's legacy remains intact, but his family’s involvement in the fraud has cast a dark shadow over his work.
