The Smithsonian Institution may be repurposing the Arts and Industries Building for its National Museum of the American Latino, sparking criticism from conservatives who fear a controversial museum sneaking through a loophole.

This decision comes after the board previously opted for new purpose-built museums, which would have required congressional approval due to their locations on National Mall property owned by the National Park Service. The Republican-controlled Congress, which has been critical of the Smithsonian under President Trump’s administration, is not pleased.

The project faced further hurdles earlier this year when a controversial bill aimed at moving the Latino museum to a site near the Tidal Basin was rejected by the House. Concerns included proximity to the water table and perceived bias in the museum's content.

Jorge Zamanillo, appointed as director in 2022, has been working hard to keep the project alive, securing key personnel and raising substantial private funding. The museum’s leadership hopes this move will avoid the need for congressional approval and streamline operations.
