In a twist on cosmic horror, Melbourne-based Origame Digital has crafted Penguin Colony, a game where penguins explore Antarctica, confronting Lovecraftian horrors. Despite the team's initial pivot from a detective-driven narrative, the simplicity of icy landscapes allowed for expansive, waddling adventures. Each species of penguin, from the common Adélie to the towering Emperor, brings unique abilities, making the gameplay a thrilling mix of slithering and sliding.
The game’s narrative delves into a 1939 expedition of two rival groups: the Maori Kaitiaki and Nazis, with the latter seeking an Aryan god. This adaptation challenges Lovecraft’s problematic themes, exploring the myth-making process and the propagandistic nature of the Nazi quest for ancient artefacts.
With a release date of 2026 for PC and Switch, Penguin Colony promises to blend Lovecraftian terror with a unique perspective, offering players a chance to experience the uncanny through the waddling footsteps of penguins. Can a flightless bird truly face cosmic horrors? The game’s creators seem to think so.
