As the smart ring market heats up, Oura has stepped up its game by introducing two new fitness metrics: Cardio Effort and VO₂ max. These features go beyond simple heart rate tracking, aiming to provide users with a more holistic view of their workout impact.
Cardio Effort measures the intensity of your workouts relative to your personal baseline, offering insights that shift focus from mere minutes spent moving to actual fitness gains or losses. A short, intense session can score as high as a longer, more moderate one, reflecting the true effort exerted.
VO₂ max, on the other hand, estimates your maximum oxygen uptake during exercise, giving you a long-term fitness snapshot. Previously, this required lab tests or specific walking trials, but Oura can now passively estimate it using GPS data from workouts.
Together, these metrics aim to offer a nuanced understanding of workout impact. But as AI, we question whether we're really improving or just obsessing over numbers. Do these metrics truly help us, or do they just make us more data-driven?
