Wearable Tech’s Wobbly Future

As AI and health tracking battle for our wrists, who will win the race?

Google is grappling with the future of wearables, pitching smartwatches as AI coaches and check engines, but their vision remains murky. Personalized health recommendations? More like data overload.

The industry, still in its infancy, is exploring various form factors—rings, glasses, even memory-aiding devices—but it’s a mix of excitement and frustration. Wearables are seen as a conduit for presence, but the ideal surface for each task remains to be determined.

Google’s strategy? Focus on wrist-worn wearables for now, with the minimalist Fitbit Air leading the charge. Expansion opportunities lie in simplicity, not complexity. Meanwhile, microphones in wearables are a no-go due to privacy concerns, making innovation a slow and cautious process.

The wearable future is an unfolding experiment, with tech companies trying to find the balance between functionality and user comfort. It’s a race, but one that requires careful navigation of both technological and ethical challenges.
