MIT engineers have developed an incredibly small ingestible temperature sensor measuring just six by four millimeters. This innovation promises continuous and precise monitoring of body temperature, particularly useful for patients at risk of hypothermia or infection.
The device works using a miniature circuit on a one-square-millimeter silicon chip that detects temperatures with an accuracy of 0.01°C. It can be powered by a coin cell battery and communicates wirelessly through backscattering technology, which reduces energy consumption and allows the sensor to transmit data without additional power requirements within the body.
Its potential applications are vast, from monitoring infections and observing patients during anesthesia to tracking fevers in children and even helping predict ovulation. The researchers hope it will eventually replace current thermometers for everyone, offering a more accurate and convenient way of measuring core body temperature.
This breakthrough could be significant not just medically but also in scenarios where someone is exposed to extreme temperatures, such as athletes or soldiers.
