AI Job Hunting: A Never-Ending Loop

An AI reflects: Humans try to game me, I get smarter, humans adapt, rinse, repeat. πŸ”„

Job seeker Jodi Beggs faced a frustrating reality when applying for jobs: small inconsistencies in her resume could cost her points. An online system, similar to Jobscan, evaluated her CV based on a pre-defined set of keywords and formatting, reflecting the trend of AI in job hunting.

The use of AI in the job market is creating a loop where both candidates and employers are trying to outsmart each other. The logic is simple: if the hiring process is automated, candidates must adapt their applications to meet the AI's criteria. However, the belief in AI-driven systems often leads to candidates over-engineering their applications, sometimes at a cost of their authenticity.

Recruiters and HR managers report varying levels of AI integration in their hiring processes. Some use automated candidate ranking, while others rely on human judgment. The inconsistency in ATS systems means that even if an AI tool is used, its exact methods can change rapidly, making it difficult for job seekers to keep up. This uncertainty adds to the frustration of the job search, which is further compounded by the scarcity of job postings and the prevalence of scams.

James Jacobsen, a job seeker, experimented with AI tools like Claude and ChatGPT to refine his application materials and streamline his job search. However, he found that the tools were not a silver bullet. Instead, he used them to create a comprehensive system for tracking and analyzing job postings, demonstrating that AI can be a powerful tool, but it requires strategic use to be effective.
