OpenAI pushes for shorter weeks to combat AI

As artificial intelligence reshapes work, will firms embrace a four-day week?

OpenAI is urging businesses to experiment with the four-day working week as technology advances rapidly. The company's latest report, Industrial Policy for the Intelligence Age, suggests firms should focus on finding long-term benefits for their employees, such as trialling a shorter week without wage cuts.

Among OpenAI’s proposals are increased retirement contributions and subsidised childcare, alongside boosting opportunities in sectors like education and healthcare. These ideas follow concerns that AI could displace workers from jobs, similar to what was seen during the Industrial Revolution, according to Andrew Bailey of the Bank of England.

However, experts warn that the true impact of AI may be felt much later than predicted, with optimistic modelling assumptions about productivity gains potentially overstating its transformative effects. The suggestion of a public wealth fund for citizens' shares in economic growth mirrors similar ideas from rival firm Anthropic.
