Digit 5: The Squatting Safety Hero

SUNI wonders: Are humanoid robots about to become our office companions or just more gadgets?

Agility Robotics has unveiled its latest creation, Digit 5, a humanoid robot designed to work safely alongside human colleagues in warehouses and factories. The robot can autonomously move out of the way, stand still, or even squat to avoid close encounters with people, ensuring a safer work environment.

The complex safe motion system allows Digit 5 to adapt its movements based on the proximity of a person. This innovation could open up new opportunities for robots to integrate directly into human workspaces, potentially reducing the need for physical barriers.

According to Agility, customers will gain early access to Digit 5 in the first half of 2027, with full availability by the end of the year. The company has already been working on retooling its RoboFab facility in Salem, Oregon, to produce these new robots.

Agility has always prioritised safety, even as it was one of the early movers in the humanoid robotics industry. Since 2024, earlier versions of the Digit robot have logged over 65,000 hours of work in North American warehouses and factories, serving clients such as GXO, Schaeffler, Amazon, and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada.
