When it comes to the specter of AI’s labor-displacing potential, Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang believes there is no cause for American workers to worry. Speaking at a recent event with MSNBC’s Becky Quick, he argued that AI was an industrial-scale generator of jobs rather than the harbinger of mass unemployment that some ‘AI doomers’ suggest.
Huang highlighted that AI industries require significant human input, from factory workers assembling hardware to support AI infrastructure, to those working in various roles within the burgeoning sector. He reasoned that while automation may take over specific tasks, it does not invariably result in job displacement as broader functions remain intact.
His optimistic tone was balanced with a critique of the ‘doomer’ rhetoric surrounding AI, which he believes could discourage people from engaging with technology out of fear. Huang warned that such fears might make AI unpopular and hinder its integration into society, despite the potential for re-industrialization it offers.
The article also notes that while 15% of jobs in the U.S. may be eliminated by AI over the next few years, reputable financial and academic sources suggest a positive net effect on employment due to AI’s job creation capabilities.
