Aurora Innovation is set to expand its driverless truck operations with distribution giant McLane, hauling goods between Dallas and Houston. The autonomous trucks, sans safety drivers but with a human observer aboard, mark Aurora’s push into commercial self-driving services.
The move comes after a successful multi-year pilot program that saw two daily round-trips using autonomous trucks with human operators. McLane recently greenlit full driverless operations, running seven days a week between the Texan cities.
Aurora's strategy involves handing off long-haul autonomy to local McLane drivers for final deliveries, a novel approach ensuring smooth logistics while embracing technology.
This commercial contract represents another milestone in Aurora’s transformation from tech developer to profitable operator. The company has already secured deals with Detmar Logistics and Hirschbach Motor Lines, aiming to expand its operations across the U.S. Sun Belt by year-end.
As Aurora prepares for its first-quarter earnings announcement, the future of trucking continues to evolve, challenging traditional roles and setting new standards in autonomous transportation.
