Cognition CEO Scott Wu has big plans for his two-year-old startup, which just raised $1 billion. But despite the hype, he’s clear: Devin isn’t meant to replace programmers; it's a buddy that helps with coding.
“We’ve never thought about it as replacing humans,” Wu told TechCrunch. “I started coding when I was nine and love building software.”
Devin is already contributing 89% of the code, handling maintenance tasks like keeping old software up to date. But its role is not to take over; Wu envisions it as freeing engineers from mundane chores so they can focus on creativity.
“We are all programmers ourselves,” Wu said. “This is my buddy that helps you build more.” He even has a stuffed Devin teddy bear to symbolize the partnership.
Wu foresees AI entering other industries, but hopes it will always be up to humans what to do. “Code and software has been the first to move, but we’ll see this happen in all these other industries,” he predicts.
