Salesforce’s AI makeover turns Slack into a business powerhouse

Slack now has AI skills to do your job for you, or at least part of it.

Salesforce has unveiled an updated version of its popular communication tool, Slack, packed with 30 new AI features. The most notable is the ability to create reusable ‘AI-skills’, allowing users to automate tasks like pulling together a budget for an event by simply typing a command in Slack.

Slackbot can also transcribe and summarize meetings, monitor your desktop activities, and offer suggestions based on contextual data. These features aim to make Slack more than just a communication tool, but a versatile platform that integrates seamlessly into enterprise workflows.

The integration of AI is part of Salesforce's broader strategy to position Slack as an indispensable business tool. CEO Marc Benioff highlighted the significant growth since the acquisition, noting over two and a half times revenue growth in five years.

However, this AI-heavy approach also raises privacy concerns, with users needing to adjust permissions for the bot to monitor their desktop activities. The potential for increased productivity versus reduced human interaction remains a balancing act.
