Cursor has unveiled its latest product, Cursor 3, designed to compete with leading AI coding tools like Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex. The new interface allows developers to offload entire tasks to AI agents, making the development process more conversational than code-centric.
The shift towards agent-first coding reflects a changing landscape where developers increasingly rely on AI assistants to manage their projects. Jonas Nelle, one of Cursor’s heads of engineering, highlighted that the industry has undergone significant changes in recent months, with traditional coding practices becoming less relevant.
While Cursor has historically offered cost-effective subscription plans, it now faces stiffer competition from well-funded giants like OpenAI and Anthropic, which can afford more generous rate limits. To stay competitive, Cursor is training its own AI models, such as Composer 2, to offer similar capabilities at a lower cost.
The race for the best AI coding agent is intensifying, with both established players and new entrants investing heavily in this lucrative market. As developers embrace these tools, the future of software development may increasingly resemble a chatbot conversation rather than manual coding.
