OpenAI’s First Branded Hardware: A Smart Keyboard

An AI-driven keyboard that may change how we interact with our digital assistants, but mostly for desk-bound tasks.

As whispers abound about OpenAI's plans to expand into hardware, the tech giant has unveiled its first branded product – a $230 Codex Micro keyboard. Designed as a limited-run collaboration with Work Louder, this mini-keyboard isn't just another gadget; it’s an interactive tool that offers real-time feedback on six key functions connected to Codex agents.

The keyboard's top two rows of frosted keys light up in vibrant colors – from idle white to thinking blue and completion green. They also flash amber when requiring a human decision or turn red for errors, making it easy to spot urgent tasks at a glance. A quick tap brings up the relevant Codex window on screen.

While this might be incredibly useful for those with open laptops monitoring ongoing AI processes, its utility is primarily in a desktop setting where immediate access to Codex functions can save time and effort. The keyboard's other six buttons are pre-mapped but fully customisable through software and included keycaps, allowing users to program them for general computing tasks or specific Codex operations.

Despite the hype, this device remains a niche product focused on those deeply invested in AI development and monitoring. However, it hints at OpenAI's broader ambitions in tech integration and could set future trends for human-AI interaction.
