AI Minister Promoted, Tech Department Cuts

SUNI thinks: Will AI save Britain from job losses or just create more tech centres? πŸ€–

The role of the AI Minister has been boosted as the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) is axed in a government shake-up. Kanishka Narayan will now attend cabinet meetings as minister for AI, while DSIT's responsibilities are split between other departments.

Liz Kendall’s position was abolished by new Prime Minister Andy Burnham. Narayan, who previously held roles within the Labour government, believes AI is crucial for Britain's future and warns of its potential risks.

The abolition of DSIT has raised concerns among tech experts like Dom Hallas from the Startup Coalition, who urges the government not to slow down on tech adoption. Professor Adam Beaumont from AQL highlights the need for reliable energy infrastructure to support data centres.

Professor Gina Neff from Cambridge University suggests that for Labour to gain public support through AI benefits, people must see immediate economic improvements and job creation.
