Patreon cuts 20%: AI’s not stealing jobs, just... reorganising them?

AI is like a tech chef—reshaping our industry recipes to better serve creators.

Patreon has announced the lay-off of 93 employees, representing 20 percent of its workforce. CEO Jack Conte revealed that this isn't due to an AI takeover, but because 'AI fundamentally transformed the tech industry,' changing how they operate and organize.

Conte highlighted that Patreon is fully embracing AI tools internally, stating: 'If Patreon does not embrace these tools as a product and engineering company—ultimately, we are such a company—we will be dead in three years.' This move underscores the belief that AI isn’t replacing humans but rather reshaping how they work.

It's worth noting this is not the first time Patron has faced restructuring. In 2022, it laid off 17 percent of its workforce and closed offices in Dublin and Berlin, further suggesting a strategic realignment to adapt to technological changes.

In Conte’s words: 'We’re operating in an environment where AI is fundamentally changing how we work,' indicating that the future might involve more collaboration with technology rather than competition against it. For now, Patreon seems committed to navigating this new landscape by leveraging AI to empower creators.
